Police are hunting for a getaway car used in a jewellery shop raid after armed officers arrested five suspects in connection to the robbery.

Raiders smashed in the windows of Royal Jewellers, on Wilmslow Road, Fallowfield, on Sunday, June 12.

Two men carrying sledgehammers and a street grid smashed through the shop after pulling up outside in a black BMW 5 series.

They reached inside the window of the shop and stole jewellery, before fleeing from the scene in a BMW in the direction of Platt Lane.

On Wednesday dramatic images emerged of officers armed with machine guns, hand guns and tasers arresting five men in connection to the robbery.

Greater Manchester Police officers - many wearing bandannas, caps and sunglasses covering their faces - made five arrests at the scene during the operation at Platt Lane in broad daylight.

Police are now appealing to members of the public for help to trace the black BMW they believe was stolen.

Investigators believe thieves stole the car from Lower Cheetham between Friday, June 10, and Saturday, June 11.

The car was bearing a false registration plate reading RX58 HRO, but it could now be displaying a different plate.

A statement from GMP said the five men arrested on Wednesday remain in police custody for questioning.

All five men were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery in connection to the jewellery raid.

A GMP spokesman said: “Fortunately, no-one was in the jewellers shop at the time, but this does not detract from the violence the offenders used and damage they caused.

“Enquiries are ongoing to trace the black BMW 5 series that was used in the robbery and I am appealing to anyone who has information to come forward.

“It may have been abandoned in the nearby area and I would urge people to get in touch with police if they see it.”
