Data from the Land Registry has shown the number of house sales at £1m or more over the past 20 years across England and Wales.

According to the figures released, 22 local authorities out of 347 across England and Wales saw no sales of £1m or more since 1995!

Tameside in north Manchester is one of these areas, and has not seen even on house sold for £1m or more, while Manchester has had just 182. over the past 20 years.

Trafford however, which is well versed in the sale of multi-million-pound properties, has had 2,165 £1m or more sales.

In 2015, the median price paid for properties in the majority of small areas in England and Wales (58 per cent) was more than £175,000, whereas in 1995, 8 out of every 10 small area had a median price paid between £25,000 and £75,000.

The huge growth in house prices over the past 20 years can also be seen in the number of sales of houses worth £1m or more. In October to December 1995, there were 185 sales in 34 local authorities but in June to September 2015, there were 13,679 sales in 245 local authorities.

In 1995, the cheapest area across England and Wales was Moss Side, which had a median price paid of £9,000, while the most expensive area was Westminster and still is 20 years later, at £315,000.

At this time, over 8 out of every 10 small areas had a median price paid between £25,001 and £75,000.

In the decade between 1995 and 2005 the median price paid for properties rose rapidly in most areas and the overall range of median prices widened.

In 2015 the most common price band for the median price paid was £125,000 to £150,000, with just under 12 pc of small areas falling into this price band.
