European money is to be invested in returning Enfield's unemployed back to work.

The European Social Fund has allocated a £35 million grant to the capital for 1999, almost a 30 per cent increase on the amount given this year.

Last year the money created 942 various training places for Enfield's unemployed.

North London MEP Pauline Green said: "More money for London means a better chance that jobless people in north London will be helped by the European Social Fund."

Speaking from Strasbourg, the MEP said that the money would be invested in a series of schemes in Enfield.

These would aim to train people in the skills lacking in the area increasing chances of finding work.

"Through these strategies we hope to provide Enfield's unemployed with meaningful jobs,'' added Ms Green.
