Kerr wins Kia Classic for 1st LPGA victory in nearly two years

Cristie Kerr won an LPGA event for the first time in nearly two years Sunday as she captured the Kia Classic in Carlsbad, Calif.

Kerr, who hadn’t won on the tour since the Kingsmill Championship in May 2013, shot 7-under 65 in the final round at Aviara Golf Club to win by two shots over Mirim Lee.

“I love to win,” Kerr said. “Golf has always been great to me, always given me special moments like this.”

Kerr now has 17 career LPGA titles. She started the final round three shots off the lead, but used four straight birdies on her back nine to pull away from Lee and World No. 1 Lydia Ko, who finished third.

And despite a three-putt bogey on the 18th, Kerr still broke the 72-hole scoring record at the Kia Classic by six shots, finishing at 20-under 268.

“I’ve been working with a new coach, and I definitely found something this week,” Kerr said. “He said I was going to have a hot round, and he was right. I just found something. I’m just real happy right now.”

Her win also ended a streak of seven straight LPGA victories by South Korean-born players.

While Ko didn’t win, she did record her 28th straight under-par round on the LPGA. She’s now one under-par round shy of Annika Sorenstam’s LPGA record, set in 2004.
