This article is more than 9 years old.

The Super Bowl is the national sporting event of the year. Whether people are excited for the game, watching the commercials or simply using it as an excuse to make a seven layer dip, most everyone will be watching the game in some way, shape or form. The most advantageous way to see it is as an opportunity to have fun, meet people and lay a little bit of a foundation for your career. Learning to utilize social events as potential connection opportunities is an invaluable skill, that you can start learning today.

Here is what you can do to help your career at a Super Bowl party:

1. Meet People

A Super Bowl party is the perfect party to make connections. It is a casual setting that tends to be a bit more intimate, so people are very comfortable. You just never know if you will meet someone who works for your dream company, or knows someone who does. Make sure to introduce yourself to everyone there and make friendly conversation.

2. Look For Jobs or Internships During A Lull

Life is short, the Super Bowl is long. Download an app like Indeed or LinkedIn and check out internship opportunities (deadlines will be coming up in a month or so), or job opportunities on your phone when the game gets slow or during half time. Use the apps to email yourself job applications that you can fill out after you watch the game.

3Be a Part of the Conversation

Watching the Super Bowl is an automatic conversation starter with virtually everyone. If you see a boss or colleague you've been meaning to strike up a conversation with and get to know a little bit better, talking about the Super Bowl is the perfect conversation starter- it can segue into all sorts of topics.
