Emmy-nominated actress Laverne Cox stopped by The New York Times's Manhattan headquarters for the latest installment of its TimesTalks conversation series.

Host Erik Piepenburg, the Times's senior culture editor, picked Cox's brain about matters including what it's like to work on the set of Orange Is the New Black and the creation of her newest project, an in-depth documentary on violence that trans women of color face, called Free CeCe.

As she does in most interviews, Cox had plenty of great nuggets of wisdom to share with Piepenburg and his studio audience.

"One of the biggest obstacles facing the trans community are points of view that disavow our identities; points of view that suggest that we are always and only the gender we were assigned at birth," she said, talking about the misgendering of trans people in the justice system and the mainstream media.

"If we really want to have liberation for trans people, we have to have gender liberation for everyone," she later said, answering an audience member's question about the spectrum of gender, and how gender identity needs to be talked about in an intersectional way.
