A planned shopping center near the Expo Line's Expo/Crenshaw stop is getting a rejiggering to add 200 residential units and subtract a little retail. Developers of the huge project, called District Square, are trying to get new entitlements for the approximately six-acre property that would add housing and scale back the space for shopping, says Urbanize LA. The future complex would replace *the former site of a Ralphs, some small businesses, and parking on Crenshaw just south of Rodeo Road.
The District Square project has been held up for a while now. According to Intersections LA, it was originally supposed to be complete in 2013, but late that year, it was only just preparing to break ground. A memo from the governing board of LA's now-defunct Community Redevelopment Agency hinted that one of the chain-store-focused shopping center's anchor tenants backed out and that caused the developers, West Hollywood-based Charles Company, to rethink the project's makeup altogether.
A few Expo stops to the west, next to the La Cienega/Jefferson station, a mammoth mixed-use development is planned that would include more than 1,200 units of housing, commercial and office space, a grocery store, and a tower about 30 stories tall. That one's expected to start construction in 2018.
