AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says that states adopting Common Core educational standards continue to suffer from “buyer’s remorse” under a wave of conservative criticism.

Abbott argued against the standards in a televised appearance.

The Texas Legislature two years ago banned the State Board of Education from adopting Common Core standards statewide.

A longtime critic of Common Core, Abbott said Sunday that the Obama administration pushing states to adopt the standards explains why “suddenly we’ve seen so many parents, so many states, so many school districts reject it so harshly.”

More than 40 states initially supported Common Core, but governors and lawmakers of several states have since reversed their position.
