Sable Boulevard between Alameda and Exposition Avenues was closed Feb. 9 so construction crews could work on the Aurora Line, also called the I-225 Rail Project.

The street will remain completely closed until about Feb. 23.

For that time, North Sable Boulevard has been detoured west on Exposition Avenue to North Abilene Street to East Alameda Avenue and back to Sable Boulevard. And South Sable Boulevard has been detoured east on Alameda Avenue to South Chambers Road to West Exposition Avenue and back to Sable Boulevard.

“Ongoing lane restrictions and future full closures are to be expected throughout 2015,” said Lisa Trujillo, Regional Transportation District spokeswoman for the I-225 Rail Line Project. “The intersection at Alameda will be closed eventually for utility work, paving and track installation. We ask that commuters sign up for our traffic alerts and allow additional time for their commute in the construction areas.”

Construction for this portion of the 10.5-mile light rail lineis around the east side of the Town Center at Aurora, along the west side of Sable and in the Alameda intersection.

Crews from Kiewit will relocate underground utilities, move the sidewalk back, install the tracks and add a turn lane on Alameda Avenue, which will also be closed for part of the ongoing construction around the soon-to-be Aurora Metro Center station platform.

The Aurora Metro Center station will be in the heart of Aurora’s city center district on the east side of Sable Boulevard, directly north of Centerpoint Drive (across from the Municipal Center), and adjacent to the existing RTD bus transfer facility.

The station will have 200 commuter parking spaces.

Once finished, the light rail will run on the east side of Sable Boulevard and then cross Alameda Avenue at street level.

The Aurora light rail is slated to open in 2016.
