Así llueva, nieve o truene. La bicicleta en Copenhague no es ni una moda ni un juguete. Los habitantes de la ciudad llevan utilizándola desde los años 70… del siglo XIX. El primer carril bici se construyó en 1910 y ahora se cuentan más de 400 km. de vías ciclistas. ¿Y cuántas personas usan las dos ruedas en la capital danesa? Según datos de las autoridades locales, más del 50 % de los copenhagueses montan en bici a diario para alcanzar sus lugares de trabajo o estudio. Hay, literalmente, más bicicletas que habitantes en la ciudad. Concretamente, 40.000 más. Entenderán que no fue difícil encontrar ciclistas para este reportaje.

Sus primero recuerdos se remontan a cuando contaba con solo cuatro años de edad. “Mi madre me regaló mi primera bicicleta con esa edad. Era azul, nueva”, explica. Desde entonces, considera que es la manera más barata, sana y sostenible de desplazarse.
Troels Wagner is inseparable from his bike. He takes it with him on the train when he goes to work and uses it to get around the city. His first memories go back to when he was only four years old. “My mum gave me my first bike when I was four. It was a new, blue bike”, he explains. From then on, for Troels, it has been the cheapest, healthiest and most sustainable way to travel.

Based on constructive protests, the district has gone from being one of the least favoured and favourable parts of this city in northern Italy to being regarded as one most worthy of a visit from locals and visitors. In addition to the commitment of its inhabitants, the neighbourhood has also benefited from its privileged geographic location and diversity. San Salvario starts on the shore of the western bank of the River Po, in the heart of the city, and is bounded to the north by the commercial thoroughfare of Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and the train station to the west. Its riverside green space includes the Valentino park, where the younger inhabitants prepare themselves to enjoy the neighbourhood’s vibrant night life. This ambivalence that defines the area also makes it one of the attractions of the historical city of Turin. It is home to a 16th century castle, in its day the whim of a French noble and now the venue for architecture graduation ceremonies. Las obras de remodelación han consistido en acondicionarlo y decorarlo tal y como estaba en los años 40. Una de sus peculiaridades radica en el hecho de que, a pesar de tratarse de un recinto muy austero, contaba con una sofisticada instalación de ventilación, generador de electricidad, salidas de emergencia y puertas dobles para proteger a sus inquilinos de posibles ataques con gas. Aunque la harira sea conocida por tratarse de la contundente sopa que se emplea en gran parte del mundo islámico —y especialmente en el Magreb— para romper el ayuno los días del Ramadán, lo cierto es que se trata de un plato que se consume durante todo el año y, sobre todo, en los meses fríos del invierno. La harira forma, junto al tajín, el cuscús y la pastela de paloma, el póquer de ases de la cocina marroquí. Y como sucede con muchos platos de la gastronomía popular, existen tantas recetas de harira como cocineros. Y decir esto en Marruecos tiene una connotación especial, puesto que en este país la cocina se realiza de puertas adentro en el hogar, para la familia y los amigos, y por ello

However, we decided to take in Madrid from up high on the rooftop terrace of the Círculo de Bellas Artes, where visitors can enjoy the best views of the city. No dispone de la fama de otras capitales andaluzas pero Almería me ha sorprendido. Un urbanismo moderno, amable y ordenado, un casco antiguo bien cuidado y sin apenas tiendas de souvenirs, una acogedora plaza vieja con el Ayuntamiento de fondo y, sobretodo, la Alcazaba en la cima de un cerro, con unas vistas espectaculares sobre la ciudad, el mar y la sierra detrás. ¡Los árabes sabían bien dónde aposentarse!
El mejor minitour histórico por Barcelona comienza en el tejado de Santa María del Mar. Además de conocer la historia de la iglesia gótica que inspiró la novela de Idelfonso Falcones gracias al encantador y educado guía que nos mostró todo los rincones de la basílica, desde allí dispones de una visión única y 360º de la ciudad. La mejor manera de sentir Barcelona, literalmente, bajo tus pies y de comenzar a disfrutar de esta magnífica ciudad.
Regresamos de Ámsterdam después de tres días intensos. Tiempo exprimido al máximo, disfrutando de las diferentes caras de una ciudad como pocas: el orden y la armonía de sus antiguos edificios frente a los canales, lugares llenos de historia y leyenda, incesante trasiego de bicicletas…Y de pronto, como si de un cambio de escenario radical se tratase, con solo atravesar un puente, girar una esquina, te encuentras sumido en ambiente canalla y arrebatador del Barrio Rojo. Un fuerte contraste que vas digiriendo poco a poco mientras te adentras en la comarca de Waterland, camino de Edam y Volendam, embelesados por el bucólico paisaje rural y marino.
It may not be as well-known as the other Andalusian capital cities but Almería surprised me. It’s a modern, welcoming and well-kept city, with a carefully preserved old town free from souvenir shops, a lovely old plaza with the city council headquarters in the background and, above all, a hill-top castle offering spectacular views across the city, the sea, and the mountains that lie beyond. The Arabs certainly knew how to choose their settlements!

We returned home from Amsterdam after three intensive days. We really did make the most of our time there, enjoying the different faces of a city like few others: the order and harmony of the historic buildings that line the canals, places filled with history and legends, the incessant stream of bikes… and suddenly, a dramatic change of scenery as we crossed a bridge and turned a corner, finding ourselves plunged into the seedy and dazzling world of the Red Light District. The contrast couldn’t be starker as we gradually entered the district of Waterland, which leads to the picturesque villages of Edam and Volendam, with their rural and costal scenery. Me dejó impresionado su hermano mayor y él también, la verdad, porque lo que menos me esperaba era encontrarme con una versión ‘mini’ del Big Ben a unos metros del hotel en el que me alojaba. El conocido como Little Ben se encuentra en la intersección entre Victoria Street y Vauxhall Bridge Road y data de 1892. Aunque el reloj que hoy se erige en aquel lugar no es el original sino una versión de 1981, merece la pena acercarse a conocerlo.
De vez en cuando merece la pena viajar a un destino sin demasiadas pretensiones. De Valladolid conocía la buena fama de sus vinos y poco más, así que mi primer viaje a la ciudad fue todo un descubrimiento. Probar lechazo para después bajar la cena paseando por las inmediaciones de Santa María y parar, de vez en cuando, en algún bar de la zona para degustar un Ribera es uno de los placeres que el buen amante del vino y de la buena gastronomía no debería de perderse.
Dicen que durante mucho tiempo los romanos consideraban a la pequeña isla Tiberina como un lugar maldito y que no fue hasta el levantamiento del Templo de Esculapio cuando dejaron de evitar pasar por ella. Hoy la isla es un pequeño paréntesis dentro de la ciudad donde los oriundos sigue accediendo por el Puente Fabricio o el Puente Cestio para acudir al hospital de San Juan de Dios o para disfrutar del buen tiempo a orillas del Tíber. Para mí, el mejor lugar para disfrutar del vuelo de las bandadas de estorninos cuando cae la tarde.
Both he and his big brother made quite an impression on me. In fact, the last thing I expected to see was a ‘mini’ version of Big Ben, just a few metres from the hotel where I was staying. Every now and then it’s worth going somewhere without any preconceptions. Valladolid is famous for its wines, but not much more, meaning my first visit to the city was full of discoveries. I tucked in to the local lamb then worked it off wandering around the surrounding area of Santa María, stopping from time to time in a bar to try the Ribera wine, an unmissable pleasure for food and wine lovers.

It is said that for many years the Romans regarded the small Island of Tiber as a place of evil, and it wasn’t until the Temple of Esculapio was built that people stopped avoiding crossing the water. Today the island is a small oasis in the city, accessed by locals via the Fabricio and Cestio bridges to visit the hospital San Juan de Dios or enjoy the sun on the banks of the Tiber. For me, it was the best place to enjoy the sight of flocks of starlings at dusk.
