For Nintendo fans, the wait is almost over. The gaming company said Wednesday evening that it would unveil its anticipated new gaming system, codenamed NX, via a "preview trailer" to be uploaded to its website at 10 a.m. Eastern time Thursday morning, October 20.

Nintendo first announced the existence of NX in March 2015. Since then, it's said almost nothing about the new platform. Is it a handheld? A home console? A hybrid of both? Smart money's on the latter (Nintendo calls it a "home system" on its website), but again, Nintendo's said nothing. In July, Eurogamer reported that NX would be a portable tablet-style console with removable controllers that allowed for multiplayer fun, and that could dock to a television set.

With a meeting of shareholders coming up later this month, it would appear that Nintendo wants to finally take the lid off of NX so it can finally begin discussing its features with investors and the media. But Nintendo's announcement, which came via email, looks like it's trying to keep expectations low, using phrases like "first glimpse" and "preliminary announcement." The company's Japanese-language Twitter says that the video will be only 3 minutes long. So how much will we actually learn about NX? We'll know very soon.
