It's Roald Dahl Day today - to mark what would have been his hundredth birthday -  and people of all ages are celebrating the life and works of one of the world's most beloved authors.

His books weren't just full of wonderful and interesting stories - they taught life lessons, which stayed with many long after they read them.

From Matilda, who bravely stuck up for herself to the BFG, who showed looks aren't everything and sometimes the best friendships are the unorthodox and unexpected, the characters, and the advice they imparted, are timeless.

Here is a reminder of some of the best quotes and life lessons from his works.

1. "A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely." - The Twits
