Terps, Spartans Set for B1G Showdown

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 5/7 Maryland men’s basketball team travels to No. 10/11 Michigan State for a conference showdown with the Spartans Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Storylines
Melo Trimble scored 18 points, Diamond Stone made a pivotal three-point play with 1:13 left in overtime and Maryland defeated Northwestern 62-56 Tuesday night at XFINITY Center. Stone finished with 11 points and Robert Carter Jr. had 10 points and 14 rebounds.

• With a win over Northwestern Tuesday, Maryland has started its tenure as a member of the Big Ten Conference with a 20-5 record, including a perfect 13-0 mark in the friendly confines of the XFINITY Center. The Terps won their first-ever game as a member of the Big Ten in an overtime thriller at Michigan State, 68-66, on Dec. 30, 2014 in East Lansing.

• Freshman Diamond Stone has scored in double figures in 12 consecutive games and 14 of his past 15 contests. The Milwaukee, Wisc., native leads the Terps in scoring in conference play, averaging 17.6 points per game with a .650 field goal percentage. He has a team-high three double-doubles in league play.

• With six assists against Northwestern on Tuesday, Melo Trimble surpassed his season total for assists from a year ago (109). Trimble posted 106 as a rookie in 2014-15. He is averaging 5.5 per game as a sophomore and has dished 10 or more assists on two occasions this season. The Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year notched a career-high 12 dimes at North Carolina on Dec. 1.

• The Terps (17-2) are ranked seventh in the Associated Press and fifth in the USA Today Top 25 after splitting with Michigan and Ohio State last week. Maryland has been ranked in the AP Top 25 for 27 straight weeks.


Scouting Michigan State
• Michigan State fell to Nebraska, 72-71, its last time out on Wednesday.

• Denzel Valentine leads the Spartans, averaging 18.3 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. MSU is second in the conference in rebounding margin (+12.2) and first in assists (20.1 apg). The Spartans are last in the conference in turnover margin (-2.8).

• The all-time series is knotted up at 4-4. Maryland won two of three meetings last season. Michigan State came from behind to top the Terps in the Big Ten semifinal in the last meeting between the two programs.
