Neymar and Lionel Messi's almost telepathic relationship on the pitch for Barcelona continues to go from strength to strength, but their relationship off it might explain why they are so compatible.

There was a risk when Barcelona signed Neymar that the two biggest names in South American football, from rival countries, could clash, but the exact opposite has happened.

Neymar has revealed that not only does he have massive respect for Messi as a footballer, but the two players are also the best of friends off the pitch.

After helping Barcelona beat Levante 5-0 on Sunday, Neymar told Canal Plus (via Miles Chambers of Goal.com):

Some things come easy to Barca and we just put in one of our best performances

I'm very happy with the result. The other day I missed a penalty but these things happen. For me it is an honour to play alongside Messi, Luis Suarez and Pedro. Messi is the best friend I have, both at Barca and away from the football pitch.

Neymar scored his 39th goal for Barcelona in the game, assisted by Messi, meaning he has overtaken the legendary Diego Maradona for goals at the club.
