The U.S. Department of Education announced today that it is putting a temporary hold on a $71 million grant for Ohio charter schools.

The department cites “financial and academic irregularities” as the reason behind the funding freeze.

Ohio Congressman Tim Ryan says he supports the decision as he believes additional oversight and stricter restrictions are needed for Ohio charter school grants.

“It’s never easy to say you don’t want money going back to your state. But if it’s going to go into a black hole and just a couple of people are going to make a lot of money off it, I think it’s appropriate for us to better monitor the situation."

Under the freeze, the Ohio Department of Education will only be able to draw down funds for charter schools with official departmental approval.
