Sergio Busquets will get pay rise to elevate him to "crack" status

Barcelona have decided to reward Sergio Busquets with a big pay rise. The Badia born midfielder is a discrete player, who doesn't drag up affairs in the media, much less publicly demand a bigger wage. He received his last new contract in August 2013, with the verbal commitment of a new review after a few months, and Josep Maria Bartomeu is about to fulfill that promise. The club are treating him fairly, for a player with exemplary behaviour.

Busquets will become part of a second tier of players with a higher salary template. The midfielder will be located at a similar weight to Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta, two of the team's captains - Busquets is the fourth captain. Near that rank is Gerard Pique, who renewed his contract until 2019. Ahead of them all, of course, is Lionel Messi. The Argentine is the highest paid player, not just in Barcelona but also in the world, after he signed a new deal before the World Cup.

Between Messi and the group of three other captains there are also Luis Suarez and Neymar Jr. The Brazilian's exact contract details are unknown, but accounting for the different variables, it seems that he is just behind the Argentine.

Busquets' new deal will extend his stay by one year, from 2018 to 2019. There will be an option to continue until 2020, based on the number of games played.
