CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland, East Cleveland and four Cuyahoga County villages voted yes to Issue 3 to legalize marijuana in Ohio while every other town in the county rejected the proposal, according to cleveland.com analysis of election returns.
The analysis of returns from the 975 precincts in the county found support for the proposal of at least 70 percent in 18 Cleveland precincts, including two precincts in Ward 5 just east of Cuyahoga Community College where the vote was better than 80 percent in favor of legalization.
The proposal won citywide with 52.9 percent of the vote, while carrying 242 of the city's 332 precincts. It was rejected in pockets on both the East and West sides, including large portions of West Side near the lake and near Rocky River Drive.
Countywide, the issue lost by a margin of more than 20 points -- 39.6 percent to 60.4 percent. Statewide, it lost even more decisively, 35.9 percent to 64.1 percent.
Issue 3 won support by 50.2 percent in Highland Hills, 53.1 percent in East Cleveland, 53.6 percent in Newburgh Heights, 54.1 percent in Cuyahoga Heights and 78.6 percent in Linndale (though there were just 14 votes cast in Linndale).
As strong as the marijuana issue ran in some areas, it was soundly rejected in numerous Cuyahoga suburbs.
The most overwhelming opposition came from Brecksville, where only 24.8 percent of the voters said yes, and the portion of Hunting Valley in Cuyahoga County with 23.6 percent yes votes.
The proposal picked up less than 30 percent of the vote in nearly 1 in 7 precincts countywide. Of those 145 precincts, just two are in Cleveland -- both in Ward 17 near the northwest border of the city.
By municipality, Issue 3 won less than 30 percent of the vote in 14 of Cuyahoga County's 59 towns and townships. It won less than 40 percent of the vote in 40 of the 59 places.
Closest to approving Issue 3, though falling a few votes short, were Warrensville Heights (49.6 percent), Maple Heights (49.3 percent) and Bedford Heights (48.6 percent).
